Poodle Aggression
Poodles can be cute, adorable, loving, devoted, amusing, and loyal. They can also be aggressive little terrors packed in pint – sized bodies. While the Poodle remains one of the most sought after breeds for a family pet, and as lovable and devoted as they can sometimes be, Poodle aggression is an issue that needs to be addressed as soon as the problem becomes noticeable. If you delay in treating the causes of Poodle aggression irreversible damage could be done, in the way of bad habits that cannot easily be corrected.
Let’s take a brief look at some of the different types of Poodle aggression and the main causes for these episodes, then we will discuss a few ways to prevent them.
Poodle aggression can be exhibited in different ways. Here is a short list:
• Food aggression- Aggressive behavior while eating, usually exhibited by showing the teeth and growling.
• Aggression over toys and bones – Usually the same behavior of growling and showing of teeth and sometimes snapping, barking, and biting.
• Aggression while playing - This behavior usually involves lunging and snapping.
Poodle aggression can, in certain instances, get out of hand, and the dog can go overboard while reacting to different situations. The ability of the owner to recognize the signs and signals given off by the Poodle — and be able to work with the dog to assure it that everything is OK — (and that their behavior is not going to be tolerated) takes someone who is in tune with the animal and can read them very well.
Caution With Poodle Aggression
A word of caution here; if you do not feel comfortable correcting your Poodle during these episodes, seek professional assistance. As I said before, any delay may cause irreversible damage, and the problems could reach the point where they can no longer be corrected.
The good news is that there are way to prevent these out-bursts. Here are some of the best tips and tricks available, to help you prevent Poodle aggression and your dogs reactions, before they take hold and become bad habits.
1. Start your Poodle obedience training at a very early age if possible. The sooner the better. Gentle but firm training, done with love, patience, and positive reinforcement, will reassure your Poodle and relieve stress.
2. Socialization is very important. Having your Poodle around family members, other dogs and children will help let him know the proper way to behave toward others. You will also be able to see any developing problems and correct them before they start.
If your Poodle is acting fine one day and the next starts acting aggressively or out of character all the sudden, you may want to have him checked by a vet to make sure he has not developed any medical problems that could be causing this change.
You can rest assured that by keeping your Poodle healthy, happy, loved, and well trained, you should have no problems with Poodle aggression. Poodles actually make really good pets.
